The word Kibosh does not have any meaning in formal proper English. It is a word commonly used in American slang. Its meaning is to restrain, check or to suppress, for instance, 'to put a kibosh on the quarrelling' means to put an end to the fighting.

Interestingly like many words that originate in slang or argot or can't kibosh too has a rather obscure origin. Its exact origin is unclear and therefore any guesses regarding the same would amount to pure speculation rather than any realistic claims. Nonetheless some are convinced this word has Yiddish roots. It is supposed that it comes from the Yiddish words Kabbasten or Kabas which mean 'to suppress'.  Alternatively Webster's dictionary claims it comes from Middle High German word kiebe which means 'carrion'. Still others feel that it has Gaelic origins.
