Sanctuary refers to two things. One it is a considered to be as a sacred place and the other it refers to as an animal sanctuary.
In terms of a sacred place it refers to a place that is either a temple or a church, which surrounds the tabernacle or the altar. In early days in Europe Christian churches were usually built only where a miracle had taken place or where a holy person was buried. The area around the altar is always considered to be holy, due to the presence of God in the Eucharist.
A sanctuary, which also refers to as animal sanctuary is a place where animals are usually kept so that are well protected and live in healthy conditions for the rest of their lives.
