Incipient is an expression used to describe something that is only partly in existence. Thus it denotes something that is imperfectly formed. Thus it means beginning to exist or coming into existence. It is the adjective form of the noun inception. Hence it is related to the occurrence or the start of something like thoughts, plants, life etc. It is used to describe the stage of something that is developing.

Therefore anything that is in the initial stage of growth is said to be incipient. The Latin form of this word is 'incipiens' which means to 'take in hand'. This word was incorporated into English during 1580-90. It is pronounced as "in-sip-ee-uh nt". Inchoate, nascent, budding, embryonic etc are some more words that convey the same meaning as incipient.
