The term artillery is mostly used in the context of warfare and it refers to an engine that is used to discharge projectiles during the war. The troops manning such weapons are also referred with this very term.

The history of the term in the present context can be traced back to middle ages when it was used in France for the first time. Earlier the word was used to describe builder of the warfare equipment.

The term is now broadly used for other styles of warfare also like coastal artillery, field artillery and anti-aircraft batteries. Coastal artillery as the name suggests resists the enemies at sea and ensures safe passage of the ships. The anti-aircraft batteries are included in the artillery only in the 20th century when it was seen that powered flights were becoming a lethal weapon in the hands of the enemies.
