Simply put, mirth means "fun or entertainment." The word is derived from the Old English word "myrgth." A feeling of absolute cheerfulness and total exuberance is called as being "in mirth." The synonyms of the word "mirth" are blitheness, hilarity, delight, amusement, glee, gaiety, jocularity, jocundity, joviality, merriness. The word seems to have entered popular English literature with the advent of the 13th century.

A person who is in splits, having a gala time at a party, at a celebration or at an event is said to be "in mirth." Here is an example of the word in a sentence:
"All the little boys and girls in the boarding school jumped around and clapping their hands in mirth when they knew that they were going to attend the New Year's Eve bash."
