Homestead means the home and the grounds that are adjacent to it which are occupied by a family. It means a house and particularly a farmhouse along with its adjoining land and buildings. It refers to the place where one's home is located.

As per the law (pertaining to the United States) it refers to a property that has been designated as ones home by a householder. This property is thus offered protection by law from being foreclosed on to meet incumbent debts.

In the United States there was a Homestead Act in 1882 that allowed a person to claim a hundred and sixty acres of public land. The condition was that the person should first clear and then work the land for a period not less than five years.
