Potluck implies food that is offered to a guest and shared by everybody. Usually a potluck is shared by a group of people. For example, different people in the office who get food from home to be shared among their colleagues are known to be enjoying a "potluck." In a potluck, each of the guests brings food (lunch or supper) that is prepared from home or a restaurant, and shares it with others who bring their respective meal. One can see potluck gatherings occurring in groups and communities. The dishes for potluck can also include desserts.

The food that is shared because of availability at a particular time is known as "potluck." For example:" The unstoppable rains made people stay in the office for the entire day and the employees had to potluck whatever was available in the cafeteria." The word "potluck" originated from the Native American term potlatch.
