Postulate can be defined as a proposition that is believed to be true in order to provide a foundation for logical reasoning and scientific investigation. A postulate in other words can mean "taken as granted." The synonyms of the noun "postulate" are premise, theory, thesis, hypothesis, postulation etc. People usually equate postulate with "an axiom" though the latter is often used to represent a truth which is believed to be self-evident.

Postulate as a verb can mean "to assert or suggest." The other synonyms are: assume, presume, suppose, guess, claim, and hypothesise.

Here is an example of the usage of "postulate" in a sentence: "Peter postulates that there are three ways to approach this problem." The first time "postulate" was used, was in the early 15th century.
