Hoax is another word for fraud or deliberate trickery. It is act of deceiving some one intentionally and is done for gaining certain vested interests. Thus it is an attempt to make people or the victims to believe in something fake and convincing them that it is real. A hoax often uses material things to assist it but can also be perpetrated by just using unfamiliar terms and contexts to confuse the victims. Unlike fraud and cons which only has financial gains though illicit in the bargain, hoax can be just a practical joke to cause embarrassment or provoke somebody.

Hoaxes can also be used to prove a point or drive home a significant fact and thus have positive uses too. Though many a time hoaxes create undesirable situations and unfavourable consequences. For e.g., a bomb hoax causes panic and confusion that may have disastrous results. Many believe that the word hoax was derived from the pretend magic incantation hocus pocus.
