A hum basically is a sound created by singing a wordless tone with the lips entirely closed, forcing the sound to come out from the nose. To hum is to create such a sound, usually with melody.

This automatically keeps the volume at a small level; hence humming is not often applied in musical productions, with a few exceptions like scat singing and vocals. Humming is at times put into use to keep the melody going when the vocalist does not know the lyrics.

A hum has a meticulous timbre, generally a monotone or with somewhat changeable tones. There are other comparable sounds not created by human singing which are even known as hums, like the sound created by insects while they are flying. The hummingbird is so called because of the noise it creates while flying.
