Melody means an arrangement of sounds that is found pleasing to the ear. It is a quality found in music. In terms of music it refers to an organised sequence of single tones rhythmically arranged with one another so as to present a particular idea or phrase. A poem which is found suitable to be sung or be set to music is also referred to by melody. The word "melody" was from the Old English having being borrowed from the Old French and was from the Latin word "melodia" derived from the Greek word "meloidia" meaning singing or a choral song.

Melody is also a girl's name of Greek origin. As a name of a person it means a song or music. It was first used way back in the thirteenth century. The variations of Melody include Melodee, Melodia, Melodey, Melodi and Melodie.

In music melody means a certain tune with or without any vocal singing. Melody mainly includes a certain change of pitch or variations in a certain tune. It can be defined as 'patterns that are similar or different and occurs in a given time with changing events'. A melody of a song can have different shades to it with an accompaniment or background harmonies. Vocal melodies with vocal harmonies provide a very colourful pallet for a song. If the song has a strong catchy melody it makes the audience connect to it.

Certain songs also have a darker shade to them where the artist applies 'Dark and Sorrowful' Melodies. Rock and Pop music have a varied style of melodies to them. Certain bands like 'Def Leppard' and Skid Row are known for their vocal melodies, while bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are known for their instrumental melodies and harmonies.
