Covenant is a bond or a pact. It also means a solemn promise. The basic difference between a covenant and contract is that unlike the latter, in a covenant, only one party is bound by the promise. In other words, a covenant is a one-way agreement where only one party has the power to break the agreement. The covenant is integral to Christian and Jewish belief. In Bible, in the Old Testament we see the covenant as an agreement between God and Israelites (God's people). There is also a covenant between the Almighty and the Christian Church. The holy covenant means the promises made by God in return for particular way of conduct expected from His people.

In the Old Testament, God made agreements with Noah, Abraham and Moses.
God promised Noah that he would never destroy Earth with floods again. God promised to Abraham that he would become the forbearer of a great nation., the only condition being that he would go to a place directed by Him and seal the covenant by conducting circumcision of the males in that nation. To Moses, God promised that he would be able to take his people to the "promised land" if they observed the Ten Commandments. In the New Testament, God promised to give salvation for each one who believed in Jesus Christ.

A covenant is a promise, like a contract with conditions for it to be held true. God made his Covenant with Abraham for example, his 'promise' to give his ancestors the 'promised' land if the conditions God asked for were met.
