The word faun is defined as an ancient Italian deity in the shape of half a human being and half a goat. It has horns, pointed ears and a tail that resemble those of a goat. Its equivalent in Greek mythology is the satyr.

In Roman mythology, the word faun is used to define as a place-spirit (place spirits are also known as genii) who lived in the untamed woodlands of ancient Rome. The fauns of Roman mythology were related to the satyrs of Greek mythology. They were the drunken followers of Dionysus, who loved to participate in wild parties, were heavy consumers of alcohol and frequently organised orgies.

One of the most famous fauns was the statue of the Barberini Faun (or the Sleeping Satyr). This 215-centimetre-long statue was made of marble and dates back to approximately the year 200 B.C.E. It is currently located in the Glyptothek Museum in the city of Munich in Germany.
