Catchment is the area from which a water body receives its share of rain water. It is more specifically a drainage basin or watershed servicing a body of water. It includes land area that is being drained by rivers. Catchment areas also provide rain water to lakes, reservoirs, ponds etc. The study of catchment areas forms a part of geography and is very important in the fields of hydrology and water supply.

Catchment areas have to be carefully studied as part of water conservation measures in order to prevent wastage of much needed fresh water.
