In geology terminology, Platte refers to a resistant knob of rock which is found in a glacial valley, or rising in the middle of a glacier that already exists. Such a substance is frequently responsible for causing the glacier to split into two near the snout.

Platte is also a river which extends to around 500 kilometres, in Central Nebraska. It is created by the convergence of the North and South Platte rivers, and flows towards the east up to the Missouri River and joins it near the Iowa border situated below Omaha.

The river is very prone to floods in the spring season and it dries up to a great extent for the rest of the year, hence disallowing navigation. Majority of the water from this river is deflected for irrigational and municipal purposes.
