The word 'lithic' has its origin in Greek (1790- 1800) and is derived from the word lithikos. The word 'lithikos' means 'stones'. Lithic is an adjective. Lithic is used to address something which relates to stone. There are minor variations regarding the meaning of the word 'lithic'. In Petrology, there are terms like 'lithic sandstone' or 'lithic tuff'. Here lithic indicates that the stones belong to the clastic rocks. These rocks could be either sedimentary or volcanic rocks. These rocks mostly consist of debris from older rocks.

Lithic could also relate to the stony calculi formed in the body. Such formations are seen in especially in the bladder region. In Chemistry, lithic is used to refer to something which relates to or contains the element 'Lithium'. In Archaeology, 'lithic' is a stone artifact.
