The word scotoma is defined as a gap or a blind spot in the visual field. In other words, it basically means an area of decreased or lost vision. A scotoma can also be one of the symptoms which are characteristic of a migraine aura. It is either a totally blind or a partially blind area in the filed of vision.
In common parlance, a scotoma is known as a blind spot. It is defined as an area of diminished sensitivity in the visual field. This blind spot, or impairment to vision, is caused by the diminished function or the total lack of function of the retina or the optic nerves of the eyes in a limited area. It may either be seen as a black area in the field of vision or may also go unnoticed. An unnoticed scotoma is referred to in medical terms as Mariotte's blind spot
