Goshen in Hebrew means "approaching" or "drawing near". Goshen is the name of a region found in ancient Egypt. It existed on the Nile River's eastern delta. According to Biblical sources it was first inhabited by the children of Israel when the prophet Jacob migrated with his extended family from Palestine.

The reasons believed to have been responsible for Jacob's migration were the conditions of Famine existing in Palestine and his favourite son Joseph finding favour with the then Pharaoh of Egypt. With the passage of time and the rapid growth of the immigrant Jewish population the Pharaohs of Egypt got nervous of the possible political ramifications and decided to enslave the Jews to curtail their rising population.

Later still Goshen became part of Palestine when Joshua conquered it for the Israelites.
