Emporium refers to a large department store. Thus it indicates a place where merchandise is collected and sold. It is often a large retail store with several departments that sell a variety of goods. Therefore it is nothing but a bazaar or a multipurpose shop selling a great variety of articles.

It may also be used to denote a place, town or a city which is known for its commercial activity or a principal centre for trade. For example all the big cities are emporiums of the world as it offers a great deal of things to be seen and learnt and exchanged with each other. Thus it is primarily a trading centre. It is a noun. This word is derived from the Greek word emporos which means merchant or a traveller. It is pronounced as em-pawr-ee-uh m.
