The word Chippewa describes a North American Indian tribe mostly found in Canada and the United States of America. The habitat of the people was principally the area around Lake Huron and Lake Superior but it extended also as far as Saskatchewan and North Dakota. The language those people used to use was also known with this very name.

There is another word that is used to describe those very people and this one is more popular than Chippewa. The word is Ojibwa and when you are going through a dictionary and not finding the word Chippewa you can always go for Ojibwa as both convey the same meaning and the second one is more common than the first one. And we all know that everyone like to use simple things.

Chippewa also known as Ojibwa and Aanishanable is the biggest group of Native Americans found north of Mexico, counting Métis. They are the third biggest in America after Cherokee and Navajo.

They are just about equivalently distributed among the United States and Canada, coz they were previously situated chiefly around Sault Ste. The main component cluster of the Anishinaable, in the US they number over 100,000 existing in a region extending across the north from Michigan to Montana. An extra 76,000, in 125 bands, reside in Canada, extending from western Quebec to eastern British Columbia.

The Ojibwe Nation was the original one to start the agenda for signing more complete treaties with Canada's leaders. Their present population is estimated to be 175,000 and the languages spoken by them are English and Ojibwe.
