Cochise (also Cheis) is biographical name that means "hardwood" in the language of the Chiracahua Apache. Cochise was a prominent chief of the Chokonen tribe of the Chiricahua Apache. He was the leader of an uprising which started in the year 1861.

He was among the best known leaders of the Apache (along with Geronimo) who resisted the intrusions by the Mexicans and the Americans around the 19th century. Cochise was a relatively large man, with broad shoulders, long black hair (worn in traditional Apache fashion) and a commanding presence.

This leader of the resistance in Arizona is a popular figure with a number of books written on him. His character has also appeared in many movies and television serials. He is believed to have been born in the year1812 and died on June 8, 1874.
