Chamfer which can also be used in sentences as chamfered, chamfering or chamfers means to cut of the corner or edge, when written in its verb form, in its usage as a noun it would imply a flat surface that is formed when the corners of objects shaped as blocks are cut off to give them a smother finish. In columns they refer to the furrow or grooves found or etched on their surfaces.

Simply put where two flat surfaces of stone, metal or wood meet at an angle of ninety degrees and where the outer side of the angle or surface is cut at a near forty five degrees angle to give a smooth or rounded effect to the corner a beveled edge or Chamfer is formed. It is a term widely used in industrial engineering to describe this particular sort of finishing.

The word is believed to be derived from the French word "chanfrein" which means a beveled edge.
