It is all the information identifying a publication. It gives details like the author, title, date of publication, journal title, volume and page numbers. Citation is also called as references. The standard reference for a law report is known as citation. It varies with each publication and their subject matter. Thus it indicates all the pertinent information about the full text of a publication. Bibliographies, indexes and the list of scholarly works have citations in them. Citations for web documents also include a URL and the date the information was accessed.

Hence they are nothing but the elements that describe an information resource. Different disciplines employ different styles of citation. It is important to choose the right style of citation for a publication because otherwise its motive or purpose would not be fulfilled. The style manual can be consulted to assist one in choosing the style of citation. In another context it also refers to a ticket issued by a police officer regarding traffic matters that gives information about the date and time decided for the arraignment of the defendant.
