Strata can be single layered or multilayered. It is a geological formation. Strata may extend over hundreds of thousands of square kilometres. It is found on the surface of the earth. The study of strata is known as stratigraphy.

Each layer of strata is easily distinguishable from layers above and below them. It is usually made of sedimentary rocks. Strata often get revealed during archaeological excavations and geological studies. These layers are not often deposited at the same time but get accumulated over several thousand years.
