The term 'to be esteemed' is used to describe a person who commands great respect and people admire him for the qualities he has. The term is a derivative of the of the word esteem which is quite often used while writing an application or some formal letter to make a statement of praise about somebody.

The word 'esteem' can be used as a noun and a verb also and when you are using it as a verb, you need to be careful as the word is not being used in the progressive tenses; that means you can't add 'ing' along with the word.

Sometimes the word is also being used to convey the idea of thinking somebody in a particular way. In this context you can use it in the sentence like 'he was esteemed the perfect writer'.
