Obedience is the act of obeying or the trait of being willing to obey. It is also known as submissive compliance. It is dissimilar from compliance which is caused due to the influence of peers and friends. Social dominance and submission are often associated with obedience. It is a trait in human behaviour. Therefore obedience is the action of complying with a command or precept.
It also has a religious terminology as per which it is considered a virtue or a principle of righteous conduct. It indicates obedience to Christ and his principles. In the Scriptures there are several different words used for obedience. Two of them are Sham which is a Hebrew word found in the Old Testament and Hupakouo which is a Greek word in the New Testament. Obedience can be defined as an attitude of heart toward a higher authority in the religious context.
