The word reverend refers to characteristic of clergy. It also used to apply as a title as well as to address few clerics in different Christian churches. It is derived from the Middle English, from Old French, from Latin reverendus, gerundive of rever r .

It is considered to an honorary prefix that is applied to many Christian clergies as wella s ministers. It is also used to address non-Christian religions such as Buddhism or the Universal Life Church.

The general abbreviations for "the Reverend" are "the Revd", "the Rev." and "the Rev'd". In a register of clergy, nevertheless, there is at times the tradition of putting "the Revv." prior to the catalog of names.
