The word 'jinx' has its origin in Greek. It is taken from the word 'iunx' which was modified from iuzien. Iuzien means 'to call or cry'. Iunx was modified by the Latin as iynx. Later, this word iynx was used as 'jynx' which means 'wryneck'. This word 'jynx' was used in witchcraft. The word jinx can be used as a noun as well as a verb. As a noun, jinx is a person or a thing that is considered to bring bad luck. Jinx could also be a period or state of bad luck. A person or a specific thing is considered to be the cause or reason fro such bad luck.

When someone brings bad luck, he is said to have jinxed the concerned thing or person. For example: he jinxed the project by talking about it to everyone he met. Curse, hex, black magic, charm, nemesis, plague, spell, voodoo (informal), evil eye (informal), and bewitch are some of the words that are synonymous to jinx.
