Incarcerated means imprisoned and constricted. It means confining someone or jailing them and keeping them captive. Thus it is the act of shutting in somebody. It is related to the act of imprisoning or jailing them. It is the verb form of the word incarcerate. It is a word that originated during the 16th century and was derived from the Latin term "incarcerare", which in turn came from "carcer" which means prison.

Detain, imprison, impound, commit, jail, confine, cage, restrain, restrict, lock up, put away etc are the synonyms of this word while free is the antonym of this word. Incarcerated thus refers to a stage where your rights and freedom is curtailed or denied without your wish or consent. This stage is legally imposed on criminals and law breakers.
