A promenade is the name for a raised walkway area. It is also known as an esplanade. They are usually found on the seashores, banks of rivers or any other large water bodies. They were used for the purpose of walking on the sea front and were used for recreation as they can be used regardless of the state of tide. They were very well known during the Victorian times as it was a fad at that time to go on holidays to seaside resorts.

This word also has other meanings in different contexts. A promenade may also refer to an annual ball or party. It can also indicate a square dance figure where dancing couples march in a circle albeit in an anti lock direction. Promenades are regularly used to bring dancers back to place if they get lost in the middle of a dance.
