The term distaff is defined as the sphere of work by women. Distaff is a term which means pertaining to people belong to the female sex or the feminine gender, which is also known as the fairer sex. It is defined as something which is characteristic of, related to or peculiar to women only. In fact, distaff relates primarily to the traits typically associated with women.
Distaff is also defined as the staff on which wool or flax is wound before it is spun. It is designed in such a way that it prevents the fibres from getting tangled and hence eases the process of spinning. Of late, spindle hand-spinners have increasingly started using wrist distaffs to hold the fibres of any type of material. The most common example of a distaff is a staff around which the fibre (usually flax or wool) is wrapped and secured by wrapping a piece of ribbon around it.
