A burgess is a citizen of an English borough which is nothing but one of the organizational divisions of a big city. A person who represents a borough in the Parliament is called as a burgess. A representative of the lower house of the parliament in Maryland or the colonial Virginia is also known as the burgess.
The word is derived from an old English word "burgus" which means a well- equipped town. Burgess in slang means "socially intolerable."

Burgess is also a town located in the Barton County of Missouri. It is a small city with a population of about 70 people according to the US census. There is also a park by the same name in the London Borough. Burgess is a popular last name. Anthony Burgess, the famed novelist and critic and Ian Burgess, the English Formula 1 driver are some of the famous people bearing the "Burgess" last name.
