Domesday Book also known as Domesday was a book which had the documentation of the great survey of England which was finished in the year 1086, carried out by William the Conqueror.

The survey which was conducted is quiet similar to the present day census done by a government. William had basically conducted this survey because he needed information about the nation he had just occupied so he could manage it. Though he was spending the Christmas of 1085 in Gloucester, William conducted an important meeting with his counsellors.

Afterwards he instructed his men to go all across England to each and every shire, and find out the exact amount of land held by each landowner, the total number of livestock he had and how much was it worth. The main reason behind this survey was to find out who owned what and how much he should be taxed.
