It is almost impossible to describe from where the name Chinook came as there are many theories in the air that have their own reason to believe what they are propagating. But the most plausible of all the theories is that the word was first used by the Chinook tribe for salmon fish found in the Columbia River. Later the tribes themselves became famous with the word Chinook.
The tribes were first found in the year 1792 by Captain Robert Gray and probably he was the first white person to have encountered with the tribe. They inhabited the northern shore of the river Columbia and the territories adjacent to it. The languages these people used to speak were also called Chinook and the wind too that blow on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountain is known with the name of Chinook.
