Contemplation refers to the activity of contemplating that is, thinking deeply about something. When one gives something a deep and thorough thought, he or she is contemplating over that particular issue. One generally contemplates before making decisions, whether they are trivial or crucial. The matter is taken into serious consideration when one is contemplating over it.

The word 'contemplation' originates from the Latin word 'templum' and basically means to segregate something from its surroundings and to enfold it in an enclosure of some kind. It is the translation to Latin from the Greek word for 'theory'.

In religious terms, contemplation is referred to as a kind of prayer. In the religion of Christianity it is often associated with mysticism and depicted by pieces of writers like Margery Kempe and Thomas Merton.
