Cultivation is used when referring to the act of cultivating or the state of something being cultivated. It can also be used to denote refinement and culture. It is used to refer to something having been learnt or developed over time as well.

Cultivation in the agricultural sense can refer to the entire process where the soil is tilled or broken up, the weeds and other unwanted material removed. The process is carried out to increase the aeration of the soil and allow for better irrigation.

When cultivation is used in a social sense it can be defined as culture, education and sophistication. In this way it is often used to describe a person who seems well brought up and refined.

In terms of the military or intelligence circles it refers to a relationship being developed with persons with the aim to gain information, control or recruitment.
