The act of giving many compliments is known as Flattery. Flattery is often mistaken for insincerity, but it's not always true. Flattery is a way of pleasing some one many people often do this for selfish reasons, expecting that flattery will get them some where. Flattery is very common in big working companies, where workers constantly praise their superiors trying to flatter them with compliments, hoping to get on the good side of the superiors.

Historically the flattery has been in use as long as one can remember; in the times of old king's flattery was often used by subjects to please the king and the queen, in hopes of something in return.

Flattery is used most of the time as pick up lines to initiate conversation with the opposite sex.
