The word descent is defined in the simplest terms as the downward movement (of someone from something from some higher place or level). It is also used to define the origin of a person or the properties which attributable to one's ancestry or origin. Descent is also known as the act of changing a person's location to a place which is located lower than or which is in a downward direction than the place he or she was originally in.

Descent is also a term used to describe the kinship relation, or the relationship by blood, between an individual and his or her ancestors or progenitors. The word descent is defined as a downward slope or bend. The lineage or the descendants of an individual taken as a collective noun is taken to be the descent of the individual. During a flight, the word descent is used to define the transition of the aircraft from zero to negative lift.

The word descend is a verb. It means to move downward and lower. To descend does not necessarily mean to move downward and lower all the way. It also means to derive (something from something) or (said of a person) to come from (somewhere). It also means to be connected by a relationship of blood. To condescend is a verb that is defined as to do something that one considers to be below his or her dignity. To descend also means to fall or to come down heavily, as if one has had a fall.

In swimming, the swimmer is said to be descending if he swims each swim (or each lap) at a faster speed that that of the previous swim or lap in a set of repetitive swims or laps which cover the same distance. For example, if a swimmer descends 3x100 metres, it means his or her second swim or lap covering a distance of 100 metres is swum at a faster than the speed at which he or she swam his or her first lap, and his or her third swim or lap covering a distance of 100 metres is swum at a faster than the speed at which he or she swam his or her second lap.
