Consternation refers to a condition or dumbfounding shock. It is the state of being in which the individual is at an abrupt and total loss of nerve in the front of a dilemma or a hazardous situation. It is basically the knowledge of a threat that finds consequence in fright. For example, "To my consternation, the door of the cage was open and the cheetah leapt out."

It can also be used to denote plain surprise, although in a negative sense. For example, "to my consternation, I realized I had misplaced my diamond ring".
