A chattel, as defined by law, refers to a thing or item or portable property of a personal nature. Ones belonging or possession that can be moved is referred to as chattel. (plural). It may include anything excepting land or estate.

A Chattel is seen as one own property, not considering whether it is movable or not. Particular usages of chattel speak only about movable articles. For example; chattel mortgage - chattel can also mean a slave or a servant.
