Crotchety is an adjective and has an informal use. It is used for a person who is irritable. For example: On the street, we saw a crotchety old man. This sentence indicates that the old person was annoyed. Such a person gets easily annoyed or one can make this person slightly annoyed over small things. This person can be perverse or capriciously stubborn. The irritable quality that is displayed by such a person is termed as crotchetiness.

There are some phrases that have the same meaning of crotchety. For example: have a maggot in the brain, strain at a gnat and swallow a camel, take it into one's head blow hot and cold, play fast and loose, and play fantastic tricks.
