Dapple refers to a marking of some kind on an animal coat. It is usually spotted, sometimes mottled as well. Generally found on horses, dapple can be a single spot on the skin or a series of spots. The animal, which has a coat that has spots on it, or is mottled, is also called a dapple.

A dapple basically refers to an undersized component of something that stands out in contrast with its background. It could be a spot, a patch or a maculation.

To dapple means to give colour in the form of lines or spots of various hues. That is, to bespeckle, freckle or stipple.
