In anatomy, the atrium means a chamber or space. In architecture too an atrium is a big open space, frequently several stories high with a glazed top and/or with large windows. Such a space is often found within an office building immediately past the main entrance doors. The Latin word atrium meant the open central court in the kind of large olden Roman house called a domus.

In anatomy, for example an atrium could refer to the lateral ventricle atrium in the brain. The better known atrium is the blood collection upper chambers of a heart. There are two upper chambers. While the right atrium takes in the body's de-oxygenated blood, the left atrium takes in the oxygenated blood sent from the lungs.
