Ditch means to forsake or leave. It also means to dump or chuck a thing or a person. It refers to the act of throwing away a thing or leaving somebody half way. He ditched his lover means that he dumped or left his lover. Thus it means to discard or get rid of something. To get away from somebody or to discontinue the association with them also means to ditch.

A long narrow trench or a furrow dug in the ground is also known as a ditch. It is dug for various purposes like irrigation, drainage or a boundary line. It is a moderate pit used to channel water also. Farmlands have a lot of ditches for drainage and water management. Ditches found on road sides are dug for cabling and pipelines but at times they create a lot of problems for the motorists and are dangerous as they can cause accidents.
