Belvedere is an Italian word, for beautiful view. It can also be a structure, a tower or a roofed pavilion with a beautiful view.
A belvedere can also be built on the top of a building for viewing the surroundings. The structure can be a turret, a cupola or any other form.
In 1958, the Dutch artist, M.C. Escher made some lithographic prints of a drawing called 'Belvedere'. It was an image of a 3 story structure which appears to be an ordinary building unless looked at closely. Defying the laws of perspective, the pillars on the middle floor are all of the same size. A ladder placed on the on the second floor going up to the third, leans away from the structure but appears normal.
