The lowest areas of water bodies such as lakes, ponds and oceans are termed as Benthic Zones.

Benthos is a term used for objects or living organisms found at the ocean floors or grounds, which are at the lowest levels of water bodies. These organisms do not have any direct dependence on the ground underneath the water level however they find the environment conducive for survival. Hence the Benthic zones are a great habitat for organisms with lower oxygen requirements and have great tolerance to cold temperatures, found underneath deep ocean floors.

The Benthic zones have characteristic functions to assist a variety of underwater developments, which make the under water environment so dynamic such as coral reefs and other formations, which have deep influence on marine life.
