The term isothermal is an adjective. It means of, indicating or pertaining to temperatures that are equal or constant. The term is also used to mean of or indicating changes of pressure and/or volume that take place at constant temperature. It could also mean of or pertaining to an isotherm.

As a noun, the term isothermal would indicate an isotherm. An isothermal process on the other hand is a thermodynamic process wherein the temperature of the entire system remains constant.

The word isothermal is believed to have its roots in the French word isotherme; a break up of is- plus -therme (which is from the Greek word thermos, meaning hot). The adverb form of the word isothermal is the word isothermally.
