Protoliterate was the very first period in the Mesopotamian civilization. In this period a lot of transformation took place and the village culture was seen transforming into urban civilization. During the protoliterate period, there were also some developments in the architecture and these designs can be seen in many religious buildings of those times.

In this regard Iraq is very important because the protoliteration started from there. It is believed to have started from Uruk (now called Tall Al Warka) which is in Iraq. The temple of Inanna and the ziggurat of Anu are the architectural structures which portray the new architecture that had transformed. Other than that the tablets which had the civilization’s earliest pictorial writings were also found in Uruk, Iraq.
