A minstrel was basically a medieval European group who performed various songs on whose lyrics spoke on stories about far away places or even about different historical events. Though minstrels were considered to be creative of their own tales, frequently they would learn and beautify the works of others. Often they were retained by crowned heads and high society. As the magistrates became more complicated, minstrels were sooner or later replaced at court by the troubadours. Their importance began to decline somewhere around the late 15th century.

Primarily, minstrels were merely considered to be servants at Court, since the name means "little servant", and entertained the lord and courtiers with chansons de geste or their limited corresponding.
