The word verdict is defined in legal terminology as the formal and unanimous decisions and findings of a jury in a court of law which are based on issues of fact which are submitted to it for decision. The verdict can also be used to formulate a judgment in a case. In law, the word verdict is a commonly-used term to define the judgment of a case in a court of law.

The word verdict literally means to speak the truth. It has been derived from the Middle English word verdit, which has, in turn, been derived from an Anglo-Norman word. It is a compound form of the word ver, which means true (it has been derived from the Latin word verus) and dit, which means speech, which has been derived from the Latin dictum. It is the neuter form of the verb dicere, which means to tell or to speak.
